Judicial Clerks
Dewey & LeBoeuf also actively seeks to hire judicial clerks. The firm pays qualifying judicial clerks the "top of the market" bonus of $50,000 for a one-year clerkship and $70,000 for a for a two-year clerkship. Please apply directly to the recruiting contact of the office in which you are interested.
The Interview
The interview is an opportunity for you to get to know Dewey & LeBoeuf's practice and people, and to make sure the firm is a good fit for your interests. You will be scheduled to meet with four to five attorneys, including partners and associates, who will interview you and answer your questions. If you are interested in specific areas of the firm's practice or wish to speak to an attorney from a specific demographic background, please do not hesitate to tell the recruiting administrator/attorney when you contact us to schedule your interview.
The Interview Process
The typical progression of an interview for our summer program is:
-
Selected candidates receive a callback invitation. These candidates will visit the firm's offices and interview with attorneys.
-
When you call to schedule the interview, you will be asked to indicate your practice area interests so we can arrange for you to speak with attorneys from those specialties.
-
Bring extra copies of your updated resume, a transcript, and a writing sample to the interview.
-
After you arrive at our office, you will meet with a series of attorneys. Each attorney meeting will last for approximately 30 minutes. Depending on the timing of your interview, you have the option of going to lunch with a junior associate.
-
To the extent you are interviewing at other firms, and to facilitate reimbursement for your travel and hotel expenses, consider choosing a "host" firm for your interview trip. The host firm helps coordinate your visit. You will make hotel and travel reservations through, and submit any additional costs such as cabs or meals to, the host firm. The host firm will handle billing the other firms you visit on your trip.
-
-
If you receive an offer from Dewey & LeBoeuf, we encourage you to return for a second visit to gather as much information as you can about the firm's people and our practice. For your return visit, you may request attorneys from specific practice areas and indicate the level of attorney (e.g., first-year associate, senior associate, partner) that you would like to meet.
The Summer Program
Dewey & LeBoeuf expects that our summer associates are beginning the first stage of a long and rewarding career with the firm. Consequently, summer associates are exposed to an extensive training program that provides them with the tools they will need to become successful attorneys. This involves a thorough orientation and various legal educational seminars and workshops throughout the summer. Examples of training programs that are offered during the summer include legal writing and research, deposition and negotiation workshops, presentation skills, business etiquette and practice area-specific presentations.
We provide our summer associates with assignments typically performed by junior attorneys. We do not believe in "make-work" projects and we feel an obligation to expose summer associates to matters that allow for a meaningful view of life at Dewey & LeBoeuf. It is our expectation that summer associates will want to pursue assignments from many of our departments and practice groups throughout the summer, but they are welcome to pursue assignments from one specific practice area if they so choose. Many of our summer associates have the opportunity to travel with attorneys and work on-site at client offices.
Summer associates are encouraged to become involved in pro bono work. Our Director of Pro Bono, Scot Fishman, actively seeks out projects to suit each individual summer associate's pro bono interests. Dewey & LeBoeuf's New York office has a pro bono externship program in which many summer associates participate every year. All summer associates in our Washington, DC office are invited to extend their summer program from one to four weeks in August by working at approved public interest organizations. Learn more about our pro bono opportunities .
On the lighter side, the firm sponsors a wide range of cultural, athletic and social events that enable summer associates to meet and interact with the firm's attorneys on a more informal basis. These activities also provide an opportunity for summer associates to become familiar with the city in which they are spending their summer. In addition, each summer associate is thoughtfully paired with an associate and partner mentor, who provide guidance and insight during the course of the program.
Our summer associates come from a wide-range of law schools and geographic and cultural and ethnic backgrounds. One of the highlights of the program is getting to know the other members of the summer class. Learn more about the diversity in our summer classes and the firm.
