Our Summer Program

Dewey & LeBoeuf expects that our summer associates are at the beginning of a long and rewarding career with the firm. They are exposed to an extensive training program that provides them with the tools they will need not only to become successful summer associates, but also successful lawyers. This involves a thorough orientation and various legal educational seminars and workshops throughout the summer. Training offered during the summer include legal writing and research, deposition and negotiation workshops, business etiquette and practice area-specific presentations.

We want to give our summer associates an insight into life as a lawyer at Dewey & LeBoeuf. Our goal is to provide our summer associates with assignments typically performed by junior lawyers. We do not believe in "make-work" projects: while our expectation is that summer associates will want to take on assignments from several of our departments and practice groups throughout the summer, they are welcome to pursue assignments from one specific practice area if they prefer. Some of our summer associates have the opportunity to travel with lawyers, attend court appearances, and work on-site at client offices. A select few have the opportunity to spend a portion of their time in our international offices.

Summer associates are encouraged to become involved in pro bono work. Our Director of Pro Bono, Scot Fishman, actively seeks out projects to suit each individual summer associate's pro bono interests. Dewey & LeBoeuf's New York office has a pro bono externship program in which many summer associates participate every year. All summer associates in our Washington, DC office are invited to extend their summer program from one to four weeks in August by working at approved public interest organizations. Learn more about our pro bono opportunities.

On a lighter note, the firm sponsors a wide range of cultural, athletic and social events that enable summer associates to meet and interact with the firm's lawyers on a more informal basis. These activities also provide an opportunity for summer associates to become familiar with the city in which they are spending their summer. In addition, each summer associate is thoughtfully paired with an associate and partner mentor whose role it is to provide guidance and insight during the course of the program.

Our summer associates come from a wide-range of law schools and geographic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. One of the highlights of the program is getting to know the other members of the summer class. Learn more about diversity in our summer classes and throughout the firm.
