Dewey & LeBoeuf Named Employer of the Year

(London - 7 May 2008) - Dewey & LeBoeuf has been awarded Employer of the Year 2008 by the National Mentoring Consortium at the NMC annual awards ceremony held on 6 May 2008 at the offices of Lehman Brothers in Canary Wharf.

Selected for its work on the NMC's Ethnic Minority Undergraduate Scheme, Dewey & LeBoeuf won the title from a wide field of 26 professional and government employer organisations, including PwC, Shell, Lehman Brothers, and various law firms.

In this scheme, ethnic minority undergraduates from a mix of universities, including some which are traditionally overlooked by recruiting employers, are matched with mentors for a six month period from October / November through to April. Through the one to one relationship and with their mentor's encouragement, students can improve their personal and professional skills, gain additional work experience and prepare for entry into the workforce.

Student and mentor together develop a Learning Contract, in which they jointly set goals for the time frame, which may cover time management, building confidence or exposure to new career roles not previously considered by the student.

Eight people from Dewey & LeBoeuf served as mentors for the six month scheme to students interested not only in pursuing careers as lawyers but also in finance, marketing and human resources.

Gail Sorrell, Dewey & LeBoeuf's Director of Legal HR, won the UCL Mentor of the Year 2008 award and Louise Boyle, Graduate Recruitment and Diversity Coordinator, won the Westminster Mentor of the Year 2008 award for their respective work in supporting students in the scheme. Another of our mentors, associate Tom Evans, saw his mentee, Nooreen Issany win Law Student of the Year 2008 for her achievements during the scheme.

Dewey & LeBoeuf associate Annaliese Hemsley, is a past winner of the UCL Mentor of the Year Award 2007 for her role in mentoring Jessica Ling, a second year law student at UCL who won Mentee of the Year in 2007. She said, "Mentoring Jessica showed me that being given advice and having a role model can make a huge difference to students."

"Annaliese was a fantastic mentor. She encouraged me and gave me the confidence I could fulfill my potential." said her mentee Jessica Ling, who went on to secure a training contract with Dewey & LeBoeuf and will join us as a trainee solicitor in 2009.
