Dewey & LeBoeuf Receives the Thomas L. Sager Award for Second Consecutive Year
(New York, October 19, 2009) — For the second consecutive year, Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP has been awarded the esteemed Thomas L. Sager Award for the Northeast Region by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA).
The prestigious award recognizes the law firm that demonstrates national leadership and the highest sustained commitment to improving the hiring, retention and promotion of minority and women attorneys. This marks the first time a law firm has been the sole recipient for two consecutive years.
"In the shifting landscape of our economy and of the legal profession, law firms need to continue to focus on diversity as a core value," said Dewey & LeBoeuf Chairman, Steven H. Davis. "While this award serves as a positive reflection of our efforts to date, we recognize that we and the profession as a whole have much more work to do."
Among the initiatives the firm has launched over the last year, include:
- Client Relations and Business Development Initiative: The goal of this initiative is to collaborate with clients on diversity programs and to work with diverse associates and partners on business development projects.
- Summer/Junior Associate Career Development: In an effort to quickly and fully integrate young lawyers into the workings of the firm, the firm established a committee to focus on the core retention strategy of ensuring workflow and developing the skill sets of our diverse summer and junior associates. The committee consists of senior partners from practices spanning the firm who monitor the professional development and utilization of such lawyers.
- Connections Across Differences: As a supplement to the firm's general mentoring program, the firm established a mentoring program specifically geared toward mid-level diverse associates. These associates enter into one-year written mentorship agreements with partner mentors to establish clear goals and expectations for the relationship.
- Law School Ambassador Program: This program established ambassador teams (current law school students and associates who are alumni of the schools) to help solidify the firm's relationships with diverse law students and diverse affinity groups at law schools. The program is key to the firm's strategy for improving recruitment of diverse attorneys.
The Thomas L. Sager award is presented annually in five US regions. The firm was selected from more than 20 peer firms that submitted applications for the award in the Northeast region, which includes New York, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Northern New Jersey, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The MCCA was founded in 1997 to advocate for the expanded hiring, retention, and promotion of minority attorneys in corporate law departments and the law firms that serve them. MCCA accomplishes its mission through the collection and dissemination of information about diversity in the legal profession. The award is named after DuPont vice president and general counsel Thomas L. Sager.
Recently Dewey & LeBoeuf also earned a perfect score and top rating of 100 percent in the 2010 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), an annual survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The survey aims to evaluate businesses on policies and practices concerning lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees and clients. This year only 22 New York–based law firms earned scores of 100 percent. Dewey & LeBoeuf is one of only 17 New York–headquartered law firms that received the 100 percent ranking two years in a row.
Additionally the firm's London office was honored with the National Mentoring Consortium's 2008 "Employer of the Year Award" for its work in mentoring ethnic minority students.
Dewey & LeBoeuf also ranked No. 4 for its diversity efforts with respect to ethnic minorities and No. 8 for its LGBT efforts in the Vault Guide to Top UK Law Firms.
