Dewey & LeBoeuf Awarded the Asian Pacific American Legal Center's 2009 Pro Bono Impact Award
Dewey & LeBoeuf is being honored by the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) with its 2009 Pro Bono Impact Award for the successful trial against a Koreatown slumlord.
Partner Dean Hansell and a team of Los Angeles-based Dewey & LeBoeuf litigators worked with APALC to defend four indigent Korean American tenants who were being forced to pay rent while their apartments were being converted into condominiums. The tenants were made to live with dust, debris, exposed electrical wires, torn up walls and construction workers intruding into their apartments.
The jury unanimously ruled against the landlord for breach of the warranty of habitability, nuisance, emotional distress and covenant of quiet enjoyment, and awarded damages of nearly $100,000. In another part of the trial, the judge awarded restitution for our clients and $450,000 in lawyers' fees. The firm donated the fees to APALC. The award will be presented at APALC's annual dinner on October 6, 2009.
