Peter Gray

Peter Gray is based in the Dubai office. He is regularly instructed by clients at the early stage of a dispute to explore the possibilities of achieving a negotiated compromise.

Peter's practice covers a wide variety of international disputes, centred in the MENA region and Asia.

Peter is experienced in arbitration under a variety of rules, including LCIA, ICC, UNCITRAL and DIFC-LCIA.

Having completed a law degree at the University of Cambridge, Peter first trained as a barrister, giving him full rights of audience in the English Courts. Peter is now also registered to appear in the DIFC Courts. Peter also frequently works with local counsel in other jurisdictions.

Peter has acted for a number of prominent banks, funds, investors and financial institutions in a wide variety of disputes, including those involving:

  • misrepresentation and breach of warranties claims
  • property investment disputes
  • construction of contractual terms
  • escrow account disputes

  • minority shareholder rights and corporate governance disputes

Energy and Commodities disputes

Peter has represented a number of entities with energy interests, including oil majors and minors (both in upstream and downstream matters), drilling companies, solar and other renewable energy companies on matters including controversy regarding:

  • exploration rights
  • profit share agreements
  • JOA disputes
  • Seismic operations
  • Supply disagreements
  • Pipeline sharing rights
  • Swaps
  • Commodities joint ventures

Construction

Peter has advised a number of clients regarding construction disputes concerning projects of all sizes. Examples include:

  • Advising contractor regarding subcontractor disputes in relation to major desalination project
  • Advising Central European refinery in relation to dispute over major renovation works
  • Advised charity in relation to claims against contractors and suppliers as part of a park construction project

Other Commercial Litigation / Non-Contentious Work

  • Assisted in a variety of internal corporate investigations
  • Acting for port operator in $100m joint venture dispute with a port facilities user
  • Advising equipment supplier in dispute over aborted joint venture
  • Acted for a major U.K. bank, pursuing a claim against a warehouse company for misrepresentation and negligence following an arson attack on the defendant's warehouse and the subsequent destruction of documents owned by the bank's customers;
  • Acted for software developer in dispute with distributor;
  • Advised aircraft leasing company on its rights against defaulting lessee airlines;
  • Advised aircraft services company in dispute with lessee
  • Claimed against a public authority for losses incurred following the authority's decision that a development contract was unlawful and void;
