Ahren S. Tryon

Ahren Tryon's practice combines complementary skills in energy, environmental and transportation law to provide a range of services to energy industry clients. Mr. Tryon has advised clients in mergers and acquisitions, licensing proceedings, and judicial and administrative litigation matters. He has represented clients before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Surface Transportation Board (STB) and federal courts.

As a law clerk for FERC, Mr. Tryon gained first-hand knowledge of the energy issues facing both government agencies and private industries. He expanded on his experience as a presiding official and as the counsel to the Western Region, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration in the Department of Transportation. He also served as a member of the White House Task Force for Energy Project Streamlining.

In addition to his work in the energy practice area, Mr. Tryon has built upon his government experience in environmental law, including National Environmental Policy Act compliance and matters before the Council on Environmental Quality. He is a member of the firm's International Climate Change Team, and advises clients on legislative and regulatory developments related to renewable and low-emissions energy projects, transmission infrastructure, and greenhouse gas regulation. Mr. Tryon also advises clients on project funding opportunities under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and Department of Energy (DOE) grant and loan guarantee programs.

Representative Matters

  • Advising and representation for DOE funding of renewable and transmission-related technologies;
  • FERC and NRC representation for seller of an operating nuclear plant, independent spent fuel storage installation, and decommissioned nuclear plant facility and associated lands;
  • Assisted public utilities in developing rate cases before state public service commissions and FERC;
  • FERC representation under traditional and Integrated Licensing Process procedures for hydroelectric original licensing and relicensing;
  • Counseled regulated utilities on FERC Standards of Conduct and Codes of Conduct, as well as Uniform System of Accounts;
  • Prepared FERC applications for change of control of utilities, disposition of assets and hydroelectric license transfers;
  • Represented first private uranium enrichment plant licensee in DC Circuit Court of Appeals review of NRC licensing decision;
  • Represented shippers and a major intermodal port in various rail transportation matters before the STB;
  • Advised clients on oil and natural gas pipeline safety law compliance; and
  • Assisted in the development of a climate change information clearinghouse for a major US energy industry insurer.
