Pro Bono Externships and Fellowships
Dewey & LeBoeuf offers several fully-paid, public interest externships and fellowships geared toward engaging both attorneys and law students in significant pro bono work.
For attorneys in our New York office, the firm offers:
- A four-month pro bono externship at South Brooklyn Legal Services, a poverty law office where attorneys advocate for the rights of low-income tenants;
- A four-month pro bono externship at Lawyers Alliance For New York, an organization that provides transactional legal assistance to not-for-profit and community development organizations dedicated to improving the quality of New York City's low-income and disadvantaged neighborhoods; and
- A four- to six-month externship with the Partners in Prosecution Program at the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, where participants serve as Assistant District Attorneys.
For law students in our New York summer program, the firm offers:
- Four- to six-week split-summer public interest fellowships at an approved public interest organization. Participating organizations have included The Legal Aid Society, Lawyers for Children, Safe Horizon, and the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund;
- Two-week externships at one of a number of public interest organizations throughout the city; and
- One-week externships at Housing Court in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens.
For law students in our Washington, DC summer program, the firm offers:
- One- to four-week extensions of the typical summer program by working at an approved public interest organization. Participating organizations have included the American Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and
- The Phillip W. Buchen Public Interest Fellowship, which allows students with an interest and background in international trade, energy, intellectual property, tax, or white collar criminal matters to work at an approved public interest organization related to one of these practice areas.
